چکیده

Radiogenic isotopes have wide application to chemical stratigraphy, geochronology, provenance studies, and studies of temporal changes in Earth surface processes. This paper briefly reviews the principles of radiogenic isotope geochemistry and the distribution of a number of elements of interest in the environment, and then uses this information to explore the range of applications to chemical stratigraphy and other fundamental subjects of sedimentary geology. Many of these applications center on the reconstruction of secular variations in paleoseawater isotope signals. These ‘‘seawater isotope curves’’ can be used for stratigraphic correlation and to assess changes through Earth history in processes such as tectonic uplift, climate change, biogeochemical cycling, ocean circulation, crustal growth, and surface water evolution. Understanding the modern biogeochemical cycle of the element/isotope system of interest is essential for gaining the maximum information regarding the operation of ancient cycles. The main sources of uncertainty for reconstructing seawater isotope curves involve diagenetic alteration, sample impurities, and errors in age assignments. Rigorous sample selection criteria and pretreatment methods are keys to reconstructing the most accurate seawater isotope curves. Applications are discussed for the Rb–Sr, Sm–Nd, La–Ce, Lu–Hf, Re–Os, U–Th–Pb, K–Ar, and cosmogenic isotope systems. D 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Strontium concentration, radiogenic (Sr/Sr) and stable (δSr) strontium isotope systematics in a controlled feeding study

Transhumance and palaeodiet are two central themes in archaeology and using chemical analysis of bones and teeth to reconstruct trends and patterns in diet and mobility has become a cornerstone of bioarchaeology. This study has investigated strontium concentration ([Sr]), radiogenic (Sr/Sr) and stable strontium (δSr) isotope systematics in a controlled feeding experiment on domestic pigs design...

Rare earth element concentrations and Nd isotopes in the Southeast Pacific Ocean

[1] Three vertical profiles of rare earth element concentrations and Nd isotopic compositions have been measured in the remote southeast Pacific Ocean. The three stations represent contrasting environments: the oligotrophic center of the gyre (station GYR), the “transition zone” east of the South Tropical Front (station EGY), and the Peru-Chile upwelling marked by a pronounced oxygen minimum (s...

Major element variations in Hawaiian shield lavas: Source features and perspectives from global ocean island basalt (OIB) systematics

[1] Among volcanic hot spots globally, Hawaii has the highest magma flux, yet there is significant controversy surrounding the composition of the mantle sourcing Hawaiian lavas. In order to place constraints on the source lithologies of Hawaiian lavas, we explore relationships between major elements and radiogenic isotopes in tholeiitic, shield-building lavas. Olivine-fractionation corrected la...

The xenon record of extinct radioactivities in the Earth.

Analyses of xenon from well gas rich in carbon dioxide reveal a large excess of radiogenic xenon-129 from the decay of extinct iodine-129. Smaller excesses observed in the heavy xenon isotopes are from fission. These results place narrow limits on any age difference between the earth and the oldest meteorites. The occurrence of excess radiogenic xenon-129 in well gas also suggests that any quan...

Invited review Plate tectonics, flood basalts and the evolution of Earth’s oceans

The thermal history of Earth, after the initial period of global magma ocean, is governed by the balance of surface heat loss and internal heat generation. An initially hot Earth has been gradually cooled down with time because, for most of Earth’s history, surface heat loss has been greater than internal heat supply by radiogenic isotopes. This simple energy balance places firstorder constrain...
